I Am A Nerd: gaining knowledge and enjoyment in pop culture
**New Episode Every Wednesday**
I always tell my son "Back in my day, it wasn't cool to be a nerd" I remember having to hide comics from friends in your locker, getting laughed at because we knew what happened on the latest episode of Power Rangers, or getting in trouble for missing the bus because we were watching Ronin Warriors. Now a new day has dawned and I can stand up with the masses to yell "I am a Nerd". Join us in the celebration of nerdy things old and new as we share our excitement with our like minded peers and you.

Welcome champions of the Nerd Realms. You've just stepped into the Nerd Dome where nostalgia, collides with a cutting edge, and every fandom has a seat at the table. This is, I am a nerd. The podcast forwards in the fires of passion pixels. And pop culture. We gather here with Kendrick Spirits, you included, to celebrate all things gloriously geeky from the vintage vaults to tomorrow's obsession.
I'm your host, the direct edition, guiding you through today's epic quest. We have a. Special guest here with us today. Oh man. Special guest, a podcaster , a pop culture enthusiast, and an award-winning journalist. So say, what's up de Chuy? What is up? Uh, I am chuy. Yeah. All those things are true facts about me.
I have what is called a Jimmy, not a Emmy, a Jimmy, uh, one that in college. Uh, you know, but, uh, overall I am [00:02:00] a comic book talker. You may know me as Chuy Bert. Yeah, it's uh, S-C-H-U-B-Y-D-O-O-B-E-R-T on all platforms. I also run my own podcast, which I need to get back on. I haven't been doing it for a, a while.
I took a bit of a break on that. But, uh, yeah, it's called comic comedians. I've had people like Colin Bun, I've had, uh, Logan Reposado. I've had so many people on that show. And, uh, but I am so glad to be here on the, on your show today, man. Um, uh, definitely got, have direct conditioning. Yeah. Heck yeah. If you don't mind me asking, just a quick, what started you into your comic journey? My comic Jo, you know, it's actually a pretty funny story. I've always kind of been into like Power Rangers TV shows, justice League Unlimited. I grew up overseas, you know, my dad was in the Navy and, uh. So I didn't have access to Marvel shows. I had access to DC shows, you know, static Shock, justice League Unlimited, Batman Beyond Batman Animated Series.
Thank, that's what I grew up on. And like, look, I love, I like [00:03:00] Marvel, but I love dc you know, so that's why I'm so excited to talk about this stuff today. I'm so excited for what James God has, but that's a, that's a podcast for another day. But anyway, I always, I, I grew up watching that stuff and Power Rangers and all that jazz, and.
Uh, you know, I, I kinda liked it that way, but when I was 17, I delivered pizzas and there was this tattoo parlor in the middle of the woods, I swear it's called, uh, I, it was called Finest of Lines, tattoos, and in the, and I was talking to the guy there and he was just like, oh, you like comic books? And I was like, well, kind of.
And he goes. Come to my attic and, and this idiot that I was follows. Nice man. I was like, that's not creepy at all. Yeah. And, and lo and behold, he had a bunch of little comics and it was the beginning of a little comic shop called Comic Orders with a Z and he is now on the 1500 list, if I'm not mistaken, if he opened his own shop.
He has his own like nice place now. Super nice dude. He taught me everything I know. And since then I've been kind of hooked and it's been a little over [00:04:00] little over. Seven, eight years since I've been collecting. Wow. And since then, you know, I've made a place on the internet, you know, talking about comic books on TikTok and Instagram.
And, uh, I've built a following of over 300,000 people. Nice. And, you know, and in my daytime I am a real life Jimmy Olson, uh, working at our Jacksonville station here and, uh, you know, doing that stuff so. Yeah, I, I seen a couple of your headshot and I, I seen you, your homage to Jimmy Olsen. Yeah. I, I dressed up as Jimmy Olsen for the Heck Yeah.
News website. Heck. And you know, like when I walked in, they were like, what are you wearing? I was like, trust me, this is gonna be great. This is, you're gonna love this. And then when I showed them, they all loved it. And they said, oh my, and then they all saw the movie after and they were like, yeah, we see it now.
We, we totally just trust the process. Just trust the process. It, it, it trust the Olson. He is the ladies, man, ladies, I'm trying to get my work done. You know, that, that like, so accurate, you know? Yeah. I I have to beat these ladies [00:05:00] off of the stick sometimes, you know? But yeah, so yeah, basically my comic book journey started when I delivered a pizza to a guy.
Long story short, I delivered a pizza to a guy. He had comics in his attic, and I bought my first comic book there. Power Rangers was the first series I ever collected, and I've collected every issue since from Boom Studios. Oh, nice. Here we are. And now I'm on a podcast with you. So, so was it.
Funny thing, funny thing about Power Rangers is that I used to watch Power Rangers as well. Still kind of kid, like teenager in high school and it wasn't a cool thing for a high schooler to be watching. But when they launched the boom studio series, I kind of discounted it until. I heard about, uh, Lord Drake and Dragon.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Dragon. And once they went through that whole series, I was like, dang, I'm mad I missed out on it. So after that ended, I started picking it up then. Yeah. And I mean, that was issue 25 when the shattered grids here started. So, I mean, that was right at the beginning. [00:06:00] I started at 10. Mm-hmm. A girl dumped me.
And so I went to the comic shop. That's where I, I'm the most happiest. Yeah. And I picked, I saw the comic for, and it was the Billy issue. Now, if you don't know this about me, the Blue Power Ranger is my favorite power Ranger, uh, of all time. Heck yeah. Yeah. There, it's So he is my favorite. Triceratops. Heck yeah. Yeah. Triceratops. And, uh, that was an issue dedicated solely to Billy. And if you look at my graduation photos, you'll actually see that I homage that comic book.
Nice. Yeah. Now, just to give a bit of backstory on, uh, you and I, uh, we met at a Jack's creator's meetup. Yeah. Uh, like, like couple months ago. Well, not just a couple. Well, we met at the first one, if I'm not mistaken. Uh, the, the first one I went to at least, uh, which was almost a year ago. Oh, oh, wow.
Because I remember you walked up to me, uh, when we were at, uh, the Gotham City Limit. Shout out to Dotham City Limit. Shout out to Ben. What's up, man? Anyway, uh, [00:07:00] we, you went in there and you were like, wait, Chu be? And I said, yeah. And then you mentioned you had a podcast and then we just never followed through on it.
Yeah. And then at the last, and then at the last, uh. Meetup. We were like, let's do this. Let's talk D Cko O. Here we are. Yeah. We kind of gave the obligatory, oh yeah, we need to work together. We need to do something, we need to out. It was all talk, you know? And then my A DHD kicked in and I, and, and I just totally forgot that you existed, you know?
Outta sight outta mind, you know? Right. I'm saying I, I know all about it. 'Cause like you mentioned, until I saw you at Gotham, I was just like, oh, oh, snap. You know, I, I met you at Jack's creators. We talked about like collabing together. Yeah, we did.
And then after that, a few more months passed by until I saw you again at the latest one. And we were like, okay, let's put something down, and get something working. Let's do, let's do it. Yeah. Let's put it together. Yeah. Speaking of content, creating, I had to look at your TikTok. [00:08:00] Um, and I must say my favorite video is, the Invincible reenactment with the gummy worms that you did.
Yeah. Okay. So for context, uh, those who are listening, um, there is a pack of gummy worms from trolley that, that has like. Orange and red and blue and yellow. Yeah. They're like electric gummy worms. And I was like, they look very familiar to me. And so I decided to do the think mark. Um, yeah. Mean, yeah. And I made, yeah.
And I made the gummy worms talk to each other as if they were the characters. Um, and I, I remember one of my coworkers told me that he saw that video and he didn't know it was me that posted it. He like, he was like, Ben, you gotta see this. And I'm like, yeah, that place looks pretty familiar. And then I pulled it up on my phone, like, here is the actual foot, the raw footage of me.
And he was like, oh my gosh. He was like, of course your your dumb ass came up with that. Yeah, [00:09:00] I mean, that's how you know you made it when a coworker finds your video and they're like, check this out.
And it's like, uh, yeah, that's me. That's actually, I, my best friend was a follower of mine. He, I, he met me in a college class. And he was like, Hey, I like your Spider-Man hat. And I was like, thank you. And I was like, I like comic books. And so I was like, you should follow me.
And he was like, oh, I already am. I was like, oh, look at that. So you gotta let that nerd flag fly. I mean, it's, it's, I love the fact that being, it meets so many people that way, and I'm so glad that being a nerd is cool. Now? Yes. Like it is so nice, you know, and it's hot. Like, like everyone's digging it because everyone has questions about peacemaker and Superman.
So it's like, I, I, ladies, ladies like slow down here. Here I am. Here I am. Single file. Welcome to the button. Make a line. So outside of comics, is there anywhere else that you draw creative inspiration from? Um, you know, movies, TV shows, all that jazz, you know, [00:10:00] uh, I, I love voice acting animation is one of my favorite, like is my second favorite medium after comic books.
You know, A beast play is my favorite of, you know, so, you know, talking like Beast boy, Carol Weezer, uh, animated acts, you know, all that jazz. I, I love doing voice acting. I always thought that was like one of the most superior forms of acting because like. You can't use your face. Yeah. You have to use your voice.
That's a hard thing. Yeah. You know, Rob Paulson, I've listened to his podcast. I don't know if you've ever listened to Talking Tunes. Uh, it was one that really motivated me to really go into podcasting. Mm-hmm. And all that jazz. So yeah. I mean, I would say that movies and TV shows also very much inspired me.
Like I said before, I was into comic books, I was watching animated shows. You know, and I'm still doing it to this day, you know, like I am. I'm getting really excited, you know, for that new Marvel Zombie show that came out. I was so excited. I watched the whole thing once. You know, and you know, it, it's stuff like that.
I just love, I haven't watched Marvel zombies just yet. I hear It is great. [00:11:00] I hear it's more, more awesome than it is scary. They're afraid to hold back on this one. So that, that's what I really liked about it. It's definitely on my list, uh, along with the 50 other million things that I, well, if you have podcast on it, man, I'd be happy to come on.
Okay. Yeah, it is spooky season. I'm trying to get a little bit more, more spookiness in there. So, I mean, horror's not my forte. So I usually defer to someone else, like before, well, I wouldn't say that it's not really horror per se, it's more thriller. It's more like, okay. Like literally I think that it's rated T tv, ma, but I feel like a teenager could watch it and be okay.
Okay. You know what I'm saying? Like they don't like swear all the time. Like I think there's like a few times where they swear it's really the blood that, that Mick gave it that time. Oh yeah. I know you're a, uh, a ginormous Superman fan. Uh, I think it You enjoyed the movie?
I did. I, I mean, um, believe it or not, I'm actually not as big. I, this is like a newer thing for me., I was more excited for Metamorpho and Mr. Terrific. Yes. In this movie than I was for Superman. Yes. Uh, I'm actually more of a [00:12:00] crypto guy. My, like, I love Cryp, I love animal based superheroes. Beast Point is my all time favorite superhero. I don't know if you could see it clearly.
First appearance right there. Um. You know, like Beast Boy is my, my favorite superhero. But yeah, Superman is up there. Uh, I'm, I'm on the Superman train, Taylor Swift, Superman, Taylor's version. Of course I is the, is my jam, but yeah, I did, I I love the movie and I love the fact that I got to help promote it, you know
I bet that was pretty awesome. Like getting to work with, some of those big time names like Old Spice and, um, yeah. Was there anything that you would've changed or taken away from the movie? Like, uh, like as a whole, like as a movie, like, would I change anything? Yeah. I mean, like, for example, I, I enjoyed the movie, but the only part that kind of stuck out to me or I felt cringe about was the whole message from Jore when he's, when they was telling them to rule over and like, take many wives.
And, it kind of like. That had me stepped different [00:13:00] outside. It was different. Yeah. It was different. It, I'll give him that. It was different and it just, it didn't feel like Superman to me. Yeah. And the way I see it is at the end of the day, he chose his own path. Yes. And that's what, that's really what it was all about.
And they did the same thing in Smallville. Mm-hmm. You know, the evil parents. Um, personally, I would've probably stuck, to the main story because like. That's just a personal thing to me. Like at the end of the day, it doesn't change Superman's character, Uhhuh and those characters are dead anyway.
So, like do what you want with 'em. Yeah. But. You know, I always did like the idea of Superman going to his dad for guidance. Yeah. So that's the only thing that I feel like would be gone, you know, that's kind of what it takes away, but at the end of the day, people are like, oh, it was, it was altered, or whatever.
And I think to myself, I'm like, I don't think it was altered. Because Terrific said that it wasn't altered. Mm-hmm. And it was when he said it, when I was like, okay, no, this is, this is legit. Because if terrific says it, then it has to be. And , I've said this so many [00:14:00] times, and if it was a repeated listener, they're probably tired of hearing me saying this, but.
DC has so many characters. Yes. But they seem to strictly focus for like the last 60 plus years we've gotten Superman, Batman, Superman, Batman, Superman, Batman, like, yeah. And occasionally we would get Wonder Woman and occasionally we get wonder Woman. So seeing like Mr. Terrific and Guy Gardner Metamorpho and Hawk Girl and Metamorpho.
Yeah. Metamorpho is in a movie. Guys. I was more. Excited to see them that I, was to see the Superman movie. Yeah, I see Superman stuff. And honestly, this was just to kick off our new universe. I don't know. You know, we are gonna be getting another Superman movie. Oh yeah. And it's gonna be a, it's gonna be, it's not even gonna be a Superman movie.
It's gonna be a Lex and Superman movie. Yeah. So now you mentioned that you had a, was able to do a collaboration with, old Spice and Superman. I see you've collaborated with some other, nerd focused companies like Oh, yeah. Nickelodeon, DC Comics, IDW publishing, nerd Initiative.
Uh, yeah. So how was it working with [00:15:00] such nerd focused companies? Oh my gosh. I, I. It, it was an honor. You know, like the day IDW reached out to me. Oh yeah. What they had me do, basically, they sent me free comic books and I reviewed them for them. That's all they did. And sometimes I would land on their social media.
Most of the time it was just for mine. It was just a help. Like I was a big name. People liked me. I was a Ninja Turtle focused guy at the time. I loved Ninja Turtles, you know, and, and unfortunately, I don't know if you knew about this or not, but um. IDW uh, in the past few years, ha haven't been doing too well, money-wise, and they had to lay off a lot of people.
Mm-hmm. And I knew I was gonna make that cut. Mm-hmm. And because I wasn't employed per se Right. They were kind of just like sending, you know, so I, but they couldn't afford to keep me around, like they couldn't afford to keep sending me stuff, you know? Yeah. And I understood. The thing that they did that I really appreciated, they knew how much I loved Ninja Turtles.
They sent me a copy of the last Ronan signed by every person who worked on it, including Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, [00:16:00] and they sent me an omnibus. Of the original Ninja Turtle series, 800 pages. Um, you know, and, and they didn't have to do that. Yeah. And they wrote a thank you note inside. They left like a little sticky note and I, and I taped that sticky note in there with the signatures, because that's just as important to me as those signatures are.
Oh, amazing. The only person I need to get to sign it is Peter Laird. Everyone else has signed it though, you know? Um. It was such an honor, , and you know, right after that, paramount reached out to me to help for mutant Mayhem. They were like, can you, uh, make a nice, yeah. And they, they paid me for that one, you know?
Uh, I got about. 600 bucks, if I'm not mistaken, just to make a 32nd video for them. I was like, heck yeah. Yes, yes, please. Uh, no taxes attached there. Alright. Yeah. We cut that part out, right, right. I'm don't pay taxes. No, no. It was like Hey, we're gonna pay you to do this. Can you do it? I was like, yeah, yeah, sure.
And, uh, they, they also invited me to the [00:17:00] premiere. Unfortunately, I did not go because of the actor strike that was happening, and I would've been labeled the scab, and it was the first time I ever got invited to a premiere too, and I've never been invited to another one since. And it's sucked that I had to turn that down.
I could have met Seth Rogan, I could have met Paul Rudd. I could have met all of those guys. Um, yeah, well, I, I wouldn't have met Paul Rudd, Seth Rogan I would've met because he was a producer on the movie. So, but, um, it, it was such an honor, you know, and like DC for Fan Dome, they sent me a bunch of stuff for Fan Dome to help promote that.
Mm-hmm. Uh, you know. Um, DC also sent me a vinyl record for when they did Dark Knights Metal or, uh, death Metal. Oh, okay. Whoa. They sent me a death metal vinyl album with all the songs that are collaborated for the Nice for, for the comic series. Um, you know, I've got loads of movies that Marvel has sent me a few things, uh, here and again, not as much as DC does because they.
Let's just say Marvel has gotten the message that I [00:18:00] like them. Unfortunately, I've made that very clear on my eye, and I hate the fact that like, I, I was like, why did I say that? You know, like, but they have sent me things times, again, like a Shung Chi movie. Uh, and stuff like that. But the NERD Initiative, I owe everything to them.
Uh, though that's a, a website, uh, that's actually where I did my kind of internship, uhhuh for college, uh, when I was a journalist. Uh, for those who don't know, I'm a photojournalist in real life. Like I said, I'm a real life Jimmy Olson. But, um, you know, NERD Initiative I wrote for them. I was one of their first writers, and they have given me so many opportunities and I wanna take this moment right now just to be like.
Thank you guys. You know, thank you. All, all of them. You know, they, they are so successful now. And I'm so happy and I still follow all of them and I make sure, and I still read their articles and I get so excited to see the new people that are coming in just [00:19:00] showing that we as a, because the NERD Initiative is named after the Avengers Initiative.
It's about a group of nerds coming together to form a community. And when I see new people coming in, it just makes me excited because it tells me that I was part of this. This is what got me where I'm at today, and I could not be more grateful. Yeah. You know, so I love the fact that being a nerd, because I was told so many times that nerdy stuff will get you nowhere.
Oh yeah. You know, these comic books aren't gonna get you anywhere. And lo and behold, here we are. Yes. You know? Yeah. I, I am a successful journalist. Sure. It's not in entertainment, but I am a successful journalist. And it's because of places like the NERD Initiative and Tony , Abdullah and Michael Rothman, you know, those guys saved my bacon.
They really did. Uh, I don't know if I would've graduated without them, you know? So that's great to hear that, that was a big impact where you are today because Yeah, I, I definitely know. It's [00:20:00] like to see where you're going, you, you definitely gotta recognize like where you come from.
Oh yeah. No, I'll never forget the roots, you know? Now is there any company or any like nerd focus group that you haven't worked with yet that you would love to? Oh man, that's a good question. I mean, you know. I know you're a Jacksonville based nerdy pod, but you know, the short box would be freaking awesome, bro.
Oh yeah. We definitely know the short box. Yeah. And the short box also collabs with the NERD initiative too. Yeah. So, uh, you know, like that would be dope. Uh, I would love to get in touch with them. Uh, but like nerdy wise, you know, if I'm thinking big, you know, DC dc uh, fan, uh, showcase, DC showcase, that'd be dope.
You know, I, I am mutuals with fantastic Frankie, you know, so I, I, you know, she's one of the hosts on DC Showcase. I don't know if you've watched that or not. On HBO Max, uh, she's one of the hosts of the HBO Max DC showcase. Mm-hmm. On Mutuals with her on TikTok. Super sweet girl, uh, or woman, I should say.
She's a super sweet [00:21:00] woman. And, uh, you know. I would love to work and be that big. You know, maybe talk to James Gunn and just be like, Hey, James, wanna be on the pod? Like, okay, yeah, come in. Yeah, he is like, that'd be dope. That'd be the coolest thing, you know, if COI is ever out sick. I, uh, I'm right here. He, right here.
Ring me up. I'll jump on it. I'm just, just a phone call away. Yep. I, I like Superman, got nothing on me. Okay. Not to, um, not to toot my own horn or anything like that, but I've been on the short box and Oh, okay. Alright. Big cheese over here. Big cheese every time. I like that. Just talk to the guys that if you can get me in touch with the guys that host it, I could definitely send, let them know that I exist.
Just send them my profile and be like, this guy exists and you need to get him. Yeah, I can definitely send them away. I was like, but I do. Every time I see 'em, I'm like, you're my rivals. You know? It's like a, like an old school. Naruto, ske, tha like you're my rival. Yeah. I mean, technically under rival too, but here we are [00:22:00] collaborating,
so we're both big comic fans. Um, yeah. Is there a book that you are currently reading? Uh, that you feel more people should pick up? Oh dude. Power Puff Girls and Thundercats. Powerpuff Girls and Thundercats. Yeah, dude, dude. Oh my gosh. Basically, the Powerpuff Girls Mojo, Jojo accidentally sent them to another dimension where the Thundercats are in trouble, and now the Thundercats and the Powerpuff girls need to team up.
It's one of those I love. Okay, so here's the thing. I walk with me. I am a, I'm gonna let you cook. I'm gonna let you cook. Let me cook. I am a huge fan of the weird comic books like the Punch, bam, pow. You know, that's always fun. But like the weird stuff is where I'm, where I'm at. Like Unironically, my Little Pony in Transformers is one of the best.
Crossovers I ever read My And Transformers, yeah, yeah. Friendship in disguise and, uh, their sequel Magic of Cybertron. Uh, [00:23:00] okay, I'll let you sit with that. Uh, there was a point where one of the ponies thought the Decepticon had matching cutie marks. It was adorable. Um, because they had all the same old logos.
Uh, but no, I'm into that weird stuff. You know, doom Patrol weird, like, like collabs that you would not expect. You know, power Rangers is where it's at. I love the Power Rangers, but right now they're teaming up with Ninja Turtles, dude, power Rangers and Godzilla. They're together right now. I love a good collab.
I love a good collab, but if you want like an actual, not like little kid comic. Um, let me think. You know, uh oh. The new crypto series that's going on. Okay. I mean, it's about to end, but, if you get the chance to read, especially this last issue, man, I'm gonna, I, I cried my eyes out.
Okay. Ryan North, if you're listening, dude, you're on my hit list. You, you gonna do that to me, bro? You're gonna make me cry in front of, at work of all places. Like, I'm [00:24:00] reading it on my break and I'm like, they're like, Ben, you okay? I'm like, no, no. Crypto's a good point. Kidding. The good? No, seriously, all loved Ryan North.
Such a great writer. Um, the fact that he was able to get me to tear up is not that hard, if a comic draws, if a comic draws that much emotion, then it has to be pretty damn good. Oh, yeah. I'll send you what issue it is. You'll see what happens. There's also a, ninja Turtles versus a Godzilla collab that's coming up too.
Oh, yes. There, I believe that is also happening as well. There's so many collab, dude, like today, a EW just released that DC and a EW is gonna be, uh, crossing. Yeah, I saw that. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah. Yeah. And uh, as you know, I, I work at Channel four, channel four has going ringside, which is a show that they have on there, and I.
Already told the producer, I was like, I will add this to my tab. I will read it to you. And if Batman kicks the crap outta Swerve Strickland, I will let you know. Um, [00:25:00] but if anything, swerve is probably gonna go up against Mr. Terrific. Because they have the same outfit right now. So.
Okay. Last question I have for you. Uh, sure. And we hop into some, some DCK of course, what the people came to hear us talk about. So you are a very big advocate for, representation of autism, and A DHD in combat. Yes., What is something that major companies can do , to help with diversity, inclusivity, 'cause you know.
Everybody deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories that they consume. Yeah. And you know, and I'm a huge advocate, like you said, for A DHD and autism, but like really any representation at all. I, I'm a big fan of, you know, like I feel like everyone should have their voice heard, just like you said.
Comic book companies do a pretty good job of it. The one thing I would recommend, like maybe not for autism and a DHD. Because they're [00:26:00] already kind of doing that. Mm-hmm. But maybe getting more writers that have lived through these experiences. Yes, yes. You know, get more, look, I love Tom Taylor as much as the next guy, but I feel like Nicole Main's run on Dreamer is, is the superior one, and it's probably because she is a trans woman, you know
so it's little things like that, I feel like if, more comic companies can, and I don't wanna be the guy that says, shove it down our threads, but like. Introduce it in a way that it's organic. Mm-hmm. And that's what I liked about Tom Taylor because Tom Taylor does great work.
Like when did, oh, he does Superman. Like when he did Superman, uh, I don't know if you remember a few years ago when, Jonathan can came out as bisexual. Yeah. Tom Taylor said, and I was reading that series when it came out. Tom Taylor said that I wanted to find him as Superman before I found him as Jonathan.
Okay. So he wanted to prove himself as Superman first, and then he came out as bi, you know? And that was something that I like. It was [00:27:00] organic, you know? Yeah. And I loved the way the artists, um, did that, I don't know if you noticed, but Hi, uh, John's boyfriend was a, like a. Visual metaphor for his bisexuality.
He was wearing a jacket that had an up arrow and a down arrow saying that he goes both ways. Um, he had, uh, pink hair, which was, I believe was alluding to the pink kryptonite. And of course there is the glasses. He wore glasses and when he was closeted, he wore the, the boyfriend wore glasses, but when he was out mm-hmm.
Took glasses off. And as you know, the glasses. Uh, for Superman is a thing for, well, not for John's. A secret identity. Yeah. For cl Yeah. It's a secret identity. Mm-hmm. Like, once he takes it off, he's out. And I, I thought that was just a beautifully done because a lot of people need to realize comic books.
Half the medium is the art. So telling the story and that, that's what I really liked, props to all everybody you worked on. I believe it was Bruno Redondo who did that, who [00:28:00] did that. So I didn't read much of John Kent, uh, on, on. Except for when he crossed over, uh, into the night wing.
'cause I'm, I'm huge. Oh yeah. Little Tom Taylor's little, yeah. Little universe that he was doing. Oh yeah. And I, I just finished reading, uh, secret six. Oh, that he and his boyfriend and Dreamer and then they brought in Yeah. Catman and, uh, dead shot and uh, yeah, I think Black Alice as for Yeah. But for that limited series.
But for autism and A DHD, it, honestly, I feel like they should make the characters that are clearly autistic and just say it. Yeah. You know, like to this day I'm still trying to convince people that Mr. Fantastic is autistic. Okay. And he said it in the comics. Yeah. You know, but he's self-diagnosed.
But I was like, he's also the smartest man in the world. So I think the smartest man in the world would know if he's autistic, you know? But say these characters are autistic. In the new peacemaker show, everyone's talking about vigilante. Now I'm not here diagnosing anybody.
I'm not [00:29:00] a doctor. I can't say if they are, but everyone kind of agrees , that this guy might be on the spectrum here. He might be on the say. Okay. All right. So, yeah, that, that, yeah. Little things like that. Just, yeah, just instead of just dropping hints, just go ahead and, yeah, don't say it.
Yeah, just say it. Yeah. Okay. Uh, so, um, we got into the DCKO. All right, let's go ahead and jump into that. And by the time this episode drops, DC KO number one should officially be in stores. So for those that are looking to pick it up, uh, let's hit on what is it actually, you know, so when they first.
Announced it back in June before San Diego, DC said it was gonna be a knockdown, drag out fight between all your favorite DC superheroes, in a cosmic tournament, to save the universe from Darkside. Yeah. And of course this brings dark side coming out of the DC all in special and him going against the entire [00:30:00] Justice League, the new Unlimited Justice League on the Watchtower and the start of the absolute universe.
And him coming back as. What I thought was DCKO was DC knockout, but it's not, oh, it's not, it's not. Koko actually is supposed to stand for King Omega, which is what dark side is coming back now, it could be a double, it could be a, it could be a double, double meaning, it could be a double meaning because they, they are knocking each other out.
In a way, yes, it's gonna be. Uh, I can see it's Scott Snyder. I, I don't, it is, it's, I like, he was just like, this is gonna be funny. I could see him doing that. He always be on TikTok. I'm sorry, Scott. I can definitely see him doing that. And, and actually Scott Snyder, I, he even said that this is without a doubt, a Superman story.
I think it was, it was either him or Joshua Williamson. 'cause they're both co-writing. DCKO. Yeah. Uh, and he said Metal was a [00:31:00] Batman story. Dark metal. Was Wonder Woman a Wonder Woman story? And DCKO is gonna be definitely a Superman story. So this is kinda like the, like a trilogy in a way.
Maybe that it, that's what it seemed like to me when I was working at the interview. He's like metal and death metal like, and then Knockout. Yeah. But, well, it's not, you know what I'm saying? Yeah. Whatever I'm saying not that looks like knockout. That looks like a punch. Okay. Like it does, like somebody literally punched the title and cracked it.
So Yeah. Like literally it's all cracked and everything. Yeah. Yeah. So, so DCKO is, they announced like the 32 characters that were, I was hoping that they were released like a bracket so we could see like who's going against who Yes. And stuff like that. But they kind of, like, at San Diego Comic-Con, they kind of like spot, like dropped a few names in there.
Yes. But they didn't release like the entire bracket. [00:32:00] Yeah, man, I wish they did. Yeah. But you know what this, uh, reminds me of? What's that? It, did you watch Teen Titans? The, I did. I did, you know the, you know what episode I'm thinking of right now? The one where they got all the titans together, like one guy, the contest at like, he got all the boys from the Titans.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he made them fight. Yeah. I hope that this is kind of what that's like now. I, I see that one. I'm gonna raise you one. Okay. All I see your Team Titans episode. Now what this reminds me of is, uh, the Justice League Unlimited animated series where, roulette had brainwashed Wonder Woman or had hypnotized one Wonder Woman, and it was up to Hawk Girl and Vixen and Huntress.
And to all, stop her. All these women didn't. Yeah. All these women, I'm, and this is what it's, reminded me of that underground tournament that roulette had. It's literally both of these episodes just combined. Yeah. I, I think so. Who would you wanna see win the [00:33:00] tournament outside of Superman?
Well, I mean, seeing who's on the ro, like, I haven't seen that roster, Uhhuh. So I don't know exactly who's gonna be in this, but from what I've read so far, you know, uh, metamorphos in there probably, um, yeah, Mr. Terrific is in there. I love both of those characters. Yeah. Uh, if Beast Boy was in there, obviously I'd be voting for him.
Uh, I don't think, I don't think Beast Boy is gonna be in there. Um, the Titans are gonna have a separate mission. 'cause I specifically went to the character roster to see if Knight Wing was in there. Because I kind of felt like Night Wing wouldn't wanna be included in this tournament.
He wanna find, look a different way. Lemme look up DCKO roster. I know some of the heroes that are in there like Captain Adam, wonder Woman. Yep. Super Girl. Red Hood, Lobo Swamp thing. Uh, Satana big Barta , which is my personal [00:34:00] fave. I, I'm thinking she's, oh, okay. Okay. I'm looking at this.
Okay. I see. Uh, power Girl. Yeah. Superman, Lex Luther, uh, Kara Super girl. I forgot Lex Luther was in there. Black Lightning. Mm-hmm. Guy Gardner, Ja. Ja Ganta. Oh. Captain Adam, Damien, Wayne, Bruce Wayne Red Hood, Batwoman. Um. I forgot the name of the Flash. Not, not Barry, the older guy. What's his name? Jay Garrick.
Okay. Jay Garrick. Cheetah Cyborg. Big Barta, plastic man. Um, it looks like Aquaman Harley Quinn. Lobo, connor, hawk. Star Sapphire Vixen. Zana Metamorpho. Wonder Woman. Uh. Swamp thing. Firestorm King, shark, Hawkman, tric in the demon and Starro. Oh, well, when you said Damien and Wayne, I [00:35:00] was like, oh, tournament over.
I may reiterate know who's gonna win that one. Yep. King Shark. Okay. No, I actually, now that I'm looking at it, plastic man, it like, from this roster alone, I would throw Plastic Man as the winner. I know he is controversial, but yeah. But, um, I love him so much. He's so funny. And I, want Ben Schwartz to play him so bad.
I, would love to see Big Barta win. I like, just 'cause she is such a underutilized character. Barta would be fantastic. I love her husband to. Yeah. It's, and you know, so, um, yeah. Can't wait for the animated shoulders coming out. Oh, dude. Don't even get me started. Yeah. But yeah, I, definitely could see Barta taking Zana, though.
Zana, uh, Zana would eat this place up , like Superman's invulnerable to magic. There's a lot of magic users in here. There you go. I, I was thinking Superman. Uh, and then you mentioned Zana and Swamp Thing, and I think Tric in [00:36:00] the Demon is also Tric. They, they could all give Superman a run for his money.
And then obviously there's Morpho, there's, mm-hmm. Yeah. You said Swamp thing, you know. Um, plastic Man has a lot. To bring to the table. So does Captain Adam Cyborg is somebody that's interesting 'cause you were saying that the Titans were having a side mission, right? Yeah. Their side mission was gonna be with the earth turning into the tournament grounds for apocalypse, the Titans mission is to evacuate the entire population of Earth.
And that's like 8 billion people. Yeah. And Cyborg is part of the Titans. Yes. Meaning they're not gonna have Cyborg. Okay. So I, I don't know if if like he's gonna be fighting while he's self evacuating or how it's gonna go. So I think this is gonna be a thing where they get sucked into like another like battle world type thing.
Mm-hmm. And they gotta just duke it out and whoever comes on top becomes the King Omega. Yes. And I know they specifically mentioned, or they've been, like we [00:37:00] said, it's a Superman story, and. They've been absolutely hinting at these solar powered brass knuckles that he's supposed to be bringing to the, yeah.
The, the, the power of a thousand sons. Yes. We see you Scott. I, I almost kind of feel like it's a, it's a jab at the century from Marvel. It 100% was the 100%, like, and I wouldn't wanna say it was a jab, more like a nod, because Century was meant to be Marvel, Superman, you know? So it, it's like, oh, yeah, yeah, we're gonna put sons in his fist.
It's like, oh, you mean the guy who's known that? Yeah. Uh, so yeah, I, I would not be shocked. If that was the case, uh, the flash, what's, do you know what the flash is gonna be like? What's his deal? Um, 'cause the flash has been, was a big part of this story here. Yeah. Uh, the Justice League Unlimited number 11.
But then on [00:38:00] the All in Justice Legal Mega Act, he's also on the cover. Yes. So Flash cl and there, there clearly is something going on there. And then on top of that booster Gold. Oh yeah. What's going on there? You know, we need to know.
That's where the story's gonna be. The thing with the flash is he's gonna be tied up with, um, impulse. I don't know what the reasoning is or how it kicks off, but impulse is gonna be starting or trying to rewind time or, or. Start another universe by creating as mix or does Yeah, by creating a, a flashpoint and like the flash is trying to stop him.
I don't know if he, if, I don't know if it posts is mind controlled or if, if he's like, this is the only way to solve this issue, or whichever, or whatnot, but that's, that's where the flash is taken outta. Okay. Gotcha. All right. Do you know anything about Booster gold? How does he tie in? Of this, the, the only thing I knew about Booster Gold is like at the end of, [00:39:00] uh, you know, spoiler alert, if you haven't read Justice League Unlimited or, uh, Superman, uh, they finally found Booster Gold after what, like a year when he was lost in the, the DC all in special.
Uh, so as far as what the part that he's gonna play in this DCKO, I'm not entirely sure. And he has a lot of speaking parts in, uh, the Omega Act. Mm-hmm. Uh, I should say right now, just for the record, that I've only read the first couple of pages of the Omega Act. It came out today and I was very busy today.
Um, so, so yeah, it was like, I, I, I read the one from last week. I read the, uh, the, the ash can of the first part of the book. Yeah. So did you, did you read the Ash? Can I read the Ash? Can. So like I, and I'm just getting these for the record, for people who are just listening, uhhuh, they were a board game, was the board game pieces talking.
No, I think they were, from what I read, what I took from it is that the poor game was first, was produced by Wayne Enterprises [00:40:00] and 'cause um, Bruce made the point, okay, there's a point where it looked like the word bubbles were coming out of the, uh, the pieces. That's why was like, I don't think, go back and look, I didn't think they were coming out the piece.
I thought they were like discussing moving the strategy and stuff like that. It could've just been me. I was probably thinking about it too hard. Uh, because like the, the board game that they were playing is they kept getting, it's like a Justice League board game. Yeah. It was like a, like a Justice League board game.
And every time you pull like a Batman card, you got extra points. And even Bruce Wayne made the point of saying is that Clark was getting pissed off. 'cause he was losing. Yes. And, and Bruce Wayne was just like, you gotta use strategy. You gotta use strategy. Which we all know. And then they, and then they saw that dark side came and Yeah.
Then they flew off and they were like, justice Lee go right. Right. Or the kaiju dark side. That's, that's now, yeah. Kaiju dark side. This dude needs to, needs to settle down, bro., Yeah, I kind of found out a little funny when Bruce was like, you gotta use strategy, which we all know [00:41:00] is, is quote unquote Batman's superpower.
So, um, yeah. So that, that gave me a little tickle when I read that. Yeah., They, it says they're supposed to be battling like through five levels , to generate enough Omega energy to take on dark side. Yes. And the winner of this, from what I read in, like, and I'll be honest, I flipped to the last page of this.
Um, the, the person who is currently the, king Omega uhhuh is, is, uh, doomsday. Uh, or time Trapper, as he currently called now time, he Oh, yeah, sorry. Time Trapper. Yeah. As he's currently called now, which dang, I haven't had. Okay. Right, right. Which I haven't been keeping up with dooms sakes. So it was a surprise to me to see him show up in these last few issues of, and he's trying, trying to help, he's trying to, he's trying to help.
Right, right. And it's because he lives at the end of the time, he literally is at the end of [00:42:00] time and he's just like. This ain't gonna work out. Um, yeah. Uh, we need to fix this. Uh, we got, I'm calling it now. Yeah. We got crisis on Infinite earth looking ass over here. Uh, yeah.
Right. We might as well go ahead and wrap this up. Uh, you know, we gotta get another one in before Marv goes, which I thought was, I didn't read the, the Superman tie end, but I did see that, Superboy Prime , showed up in it. Yeah. And which I'm, I'm glad they utilized that character because the, the last time we saw him was in what?
Final crisis. Yep. And he was locked away because he went absolutely insane. Yes. Um. That one pissed me off 'cause they tried to kill night wing in it. So me And I'm fi wing that you like night wing? Uh, just a little bit. Just a little bit. I mean, I, I, I like the booty as much as the next guy, but anyway, like, I'm here, I'm here for it, man.
I'm here for it. It that up, that upcoming pumpkin shorts variant. It is [00:43:00] looking spicy. The man has a dump truck back there, bro. Like it's spherical, spherical, uh, greatest ass in all comics after that. It's Spider-Man and it's the gymnast. It's the gymnastics. If you want a dump truck, if you need a big, lots parking lot for an ass double sheet up.
On a Tuesday afternoon, the night wing is a key. I'm licking my lips. I am just kidding. Alright.
I, I like how we were talking about dark side taking over. It's like night wing's ass. Uh, we need to take a, do a side quest right quick.
Oh, one other thing that I found out and I may be looking. Forward to this more than I am looking for The DCKO is the Batman spinoff that's coming out of that. Oh yeah. Yeah. I guess it's not officially participating in a tournament. Uh, 'cause he's not on that 32 [00:44:00] roster Is he?
Who is Batman? Yeah, he's on there. Oh, is he on there? Okay. Is a uh, red hood Batwoman. And, uh, Damien, Wayne and, uh, Batman are all there. Okay. Okay , so Night Wing is not there. Yes, Tim Drake is not there. But his line or the, the series that comes outta that is, uh, was it called Bat Night or Batman Night or something along those lines.
But in that he has to battle. Each of the robins from a timeline to where he's died and they've taken over as Batman. Oh dude, that's sick. So I love that. That should be its own series. Yeah. Heck yeah. That should be like, don't make that a tie in dc Come on. Yeah. I ever made the balls outta that. It, it's almost kind of like metal, like Batman metal where you had the different Batmans from the different universes.
So God, him versus red hood Batman. That would be, that would be [00:45:00] interesting. But he's supposedly square off against each of his robins from a timeline where he is ta He's died and they probably think that he's like a ghost or something. They're like, oh, you gotta, you gotta go, man. Yeah. So that all these traumatized orphans just fucking just, they're like, oh no, my other dead dad.
Like that is his specialty. That's his other S. That enough. I got one gone. Dude. Like Don Devil, another one. Okay, that's bad beds. Other superpower. Traumatized orphans. Yeah. So last thing that I had is that, um. DC has also came out and said that DCKO is only like a middle chapter. Uh, and there's a third coming, like in 20 27.
And it's, to me, it was kind of hard to imagine DC Encore, anything works. Right? And this, [00:46:00] this is, this third chapter that's coming in 2027 is supposed to be like, like some type of finale. Okay , they always kind of feel like one though. Yeah. Well, yeah, they say finale, but it always leads into the next one.
Yeah, that's, that's, I think that's comics in general. And Scott Snyder's the one behind all of them too. Like, I don't know if you've noticed that tread, they're just like, you know, it's Scott just to have fun, have fun, the whole universe, just do it. And the fact that he hasn't called it the Snyder verse yet, because that's technically not trademarked.
Um. You know, missed opportunity, Scott. And I mean, but, but Scott Snyder is doing an awesome job with DC He is. And I, I love the stuff that he's doing. Yeah, absolutely. Well, before we wrap it up, Chubi, is there anything that you wanna put out? Any last words or, well, I mean, man, I, beast Boy is gonna make a surprise appearance.
And, and, and, uh, he's gonna kick all of these guys' asses. Uh, I love Beast Boy, [00:47:00] bro. Peace Boy is the best. Uh, I think you meant to say is that he's gonna kick everybody's ass except for my weight if they kick everybody's ass, bro. Well be all your asses, bro. Yo doc. Except for my mama, Raven. Okay.
Heard you're looking for a new beast. Boy, I'm just kidding. No, I, I could never replace Greg. I, I could never replace Greg. He's too iconic. Even if I was offered it, I wouldn't take it. But, um, yeah, no, uh, I, I'm super excited. It, it, I, I'm just excited. Yeah. You know, I love the fact that like, it's like getting your toys out of a toy box and making 'em fight.
Yeah, that's kind of where Scott Snyder is right now. He is taking our favorite toys outta the chest and he's pinning them against each other. And that's what I'm looking forward to. That's what I wanna see. And that's what I love about comic books. Like, look, I love my good like narratives, you know, that like, you know, the Tom k kind of stuff, you [00:48:00] know, where it's like, uh, it's a little dark, it's gritty, and it, it's got like a hidden meaning and hidden message.
But like I said earlier. I'm into that. I'm into that weird part of comic books, you know, like sure, the beat 'em up, pow, kick, punch, kazoo. Right? That's what this is gonna be. And I'm exci, but I know that Superman's side Quest, which is probably supposed to be the main quest, is going to be, is gonna be that.
And I, I really hope that everyone enjoys it and I hope that everyone gets to see their favorite character at their full potential. Me too. DC actually said that they drew inspiration. From, such titles like Avengers versus X-Men. 'cause they were like Squi game.
We haven't done like a all in fight with, DC superheroes yet. And they were like, let's give it to Scott and let him run with it. Yeah. Let Scott have some fun. And you know, like Scott said that it's kind like Squid Game. Yes. What he said. I seen that too. Yeah. So yeah, like who, who knows? Uh, battle Royale.
Yeah. I don't know if [00:49:00] you've ever seen that movie, Japanese movie. Yeah, it's actually coming back in the theater for the 40th anniversary. So what? Yeah, I'm might have to go see that because I love the Belco experiment, so it's like, yeah, I might go do that. All right, dope. Okay. But yeah, besides that, that's all I got.
You gotta think. Well, uh, I, I pretty much went over everything I had. Chubi, uh, I do wanna say that I appreciate you coming on and finally getting the collaboration with you. Uh, yeah, if you wanna tell everybody where they can find you at, uh, go ahead and give any shout outs or anything like that. Feel free.
Okay, so my address, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. Um, so if you guys wanna find me on social media, I am Shoey Doobie. I'm shoey do Bert on all social media platforms. I'm mostly active on TikTok and Instagram. Um, you can find me and Chuy. Duber is spelled S-C-H-U-B-Y-D-O-O-B-E-R-T. I'm also gonna start running my podcast again.
Comic comedians. You can find it on all [00:50:00] platforms. It is super fun. Uh, like I said, I have all episodes are up for free. Uh, there you could listen. I've, like I said, Cullen, Bunn, Natalie Rafa, uh, so many. So, uh, uh, Dave Baker. Dave Baker nominated and he, I helped promote his book, which was then nominated for an Eisner that same year.
I helped market that. You are welcome, Dave. I'm just kidding. Dave Dessert. I, it, it was the best, it was the best, uh, rejection he ever got is what he said. But, um, but no, no, I'm super proud of that guy. I'm super happy that he reached out to me to do that. But yeah, no, you guys can find me on all those things.
Um, I also like. Like I said, I'm a news guy, so sometimes I post what I'm doing in the news. You know, like the other day I was standing on some dude's roof, uh, and I was oyster oyster fishing. The other day I was checking out oysters. Um, you know, uh, sometimes I just stand in the weather because I have the job that when a tornado or [00:51:00] hurricane hits Florida, I'm the idiot.
If you ever are driving by in Florida here in, in the Jacksonville area. And you see some idiot standing outside in the middle of a storm with a camera. Say, Hey, sh be, and I'll look at you and wave and say, Hey. Say hey. Sh, be, uh, yeah, that's what I do, man. Uh, so yeah, you guys can find me all on those platforms.
Awesome sauce. Well, uh, I appreciate everybody listening and DC by the time this episode hits. DCKO number one should be in, in theaters, uh, October 8th in theaters, guys in theaters or in in your local comic book shops. I'm thinking about that Royal don't watch.
So definitely make sure you go pick that up. Uh, and remember, live your best geek life. Play games, read comics, watch anime, geek responsibly, peace and make the power protect you.[00:52:00]
